According to the Johan Hagemeyer business records (BANC MSS C-G 272), Shawl sat for Hagemeyer in the photographer's studio
in 1929 and 1944. Notations on portraits of Hagemeyer taken at these times (found in BANC PIC 1964.063--PIC) suggest that
Shawl may have photographed Hagemeyer during these visits.

Louis Shawl (1905-1998) was a graphic designer who attended and taught at California College of Arts and Crafts. He was a
partner in the design team Shawl, Nyeland and Seavey, served as manager of the Graphic Communications unit of Walter Landor
Associates, and was a member of the San Francisco Advertising Club and the Art Directors and Artists Club of San Francisco.
Shawl was also an amateur photographer, known to have befriended and studied under Johan Hagemeyer.
